People who eat breakfast are 50% less likely to be obese than people that don't eat breakfast.
30% of us skip breakfast. Break-fast is exactly that. It ends your overnight fast during which blood sugar (glucose) in your body has been absorbed from the carbs eaten the day before. When glucose levels dip your body releases stored sugar or glycogen which breaks down fatty acids to produce energy. Without carbs from breakfast, fatty acids aren't completely oxidized. You get "bad mileage" out of your fuel mix. Your energy level and metabolism stalls out. Like a car with a bad tank of gasoline, you run but only after a lot of coughing, sputtering, and stalling. I know when I skip breakfast it throws me off. I feel lethargic and irritable. Some people experience depressed feelings and find it hard to make good decisions.
Eating breakfast creates an opportunity for long term weight management by giving you calorie control. By having a steady supply of fuel throughout the day your metabolism evens out. Eating foods early in the day with fiber, good fats, and protein provide satiety and prevent cravings and overeating or resorting to junk calories. If it looks like it's going to be "one of those days" have oatmeal. Oatmeal is a really slow digestion food. It's almost like having time released energy. If the day is going to be long and the lunch hour far off...have oatmeal.
Let me guess...you don't like oatmeal or you just don't like breakfast. Well you don't have to eat a "traditional" breakfast. My hubby likes to mix uncooked oatmeal with yogurt and fresh fruit to make an untraditional muesli like we had for breakfast years ago in Switzerland. Here are some quick and healthy breakfast opitons to try.
1. Whole wheat toast with peanut butter and 1/2 grapefruit.
2. Vanilla low fat yogurt, fresh berries, oatmeal, granola, or a whole grain cereal like Grape Nuts.
3. Multigrain waffle with banana and a hard boiled egg (you can hard boil the eggs on the weekends).
4. Bran muffin (regular size) with almond butter, apple slice or grapes.
5. Oatmeal (1/2 cup dry to start) sprinkle in brown sugar, cinnimon with walnut halves and 1/2 cup strawberries.
6. Whole wheat English muffin, 1/2 cup lowfat cottage cheese, 1/4 cantalope.
7. Sliced turkey breast (1 slice) with 1 slice lowfat cheese on whole wheat or blue corn tortilla, fresh pineapple slices.
The point is it doesn't take much to get the variety you need for a good start. Here's an added plus for breakfast...
It makes you sexy!
Added energy early in the day boosts your libido for later in the day! A good breakfast is the precursor to "afternoon delight"
